7300 SOUND CARD ERROR(Help Needed: Audio Transmission Issue with WFVIEW Remote Contro)

Help Needed: Audio Transmission Issue with WFVIEW Remote Control

Hello everyone,

I’m BG2CTX
I using the ICOM 7300 radio with WFVIEW for remote control and WSJT-X for FT8 decoding and transmission. My setup and basic configuration are as follows:

  1. Radio Connection: The ICOM 7300 is connected to a PC via a standard USB interface, with both USB drivers and sound card drivers installed.
  2. Software Configuration:
  • Local PC (Server): Running WFVIEW, using the USB sound card for audio capture and transmission.
  • Remote PC: Running WFVIEW for spectrum display, radio control, and audio monitoring.

The system used to work seamlessly, but recently, the remote PC has been unable to receive audio from the radio. Below is a detailed description of the problem and troubleshooting steps I’ve taken.

Issue Description

  • Symptoms:
    • Spectrum and Control Normal: The remote PC’s WFVIEW shows the spectrum display and can control the radio properly, indicating that network transmission and USB interface control are working fine.
    • Audio Transmission Failed: The remote PC cannot receive or monitor the audio from the radio.
  • Troubleshooting:
    1. USB Sound Card Hardware Verified:
    • Using the Windows sound control panel to monitor the USB sound card’s recording input, I can hear the audio from the radio, confirming that the audio is successfully transmitted to the local PC.
    1. WSJT-X Error:
    • WSJT-X connects to WFVIEW via the EXTERNAL CONTROL feature and can control the radio frequency, but it shows a SOUND CARD INPUT ERROR, indicating that WSJT-X cannot decode audio from the sound card.
    1. WFVIEW Configuration Suspected:
    • Based on previous experience, WSJT-X and WFVIEW should be able to use the USB sound card simultaneously without interference. However, this is not working now.
  • Attempts to Resolve:
    • Restarting the radio.
    • Reinstalling the USB sound card driver.
    • Checking audio device settings in both WFVIEW and Windows, but the issue persists.

Request for Help

It seems to be an audio transmission configuration issue. I am unsure whether it is due to Windows audio settings or WFVIEW settings, which may be preventing WFVIEW from properly capturing audio from the USB sound card.

Below is the log from WFVIEW on the server side: View Log Here

I’m a bit confused here.

You seem to have a server and a remote PC. But you do not seem to have a local PC to sit at. Please confirm.

Turn on the TxRxAudio meter on your wfview client. This meter will move whenever there is audio coming in over the network. If it does not move, there is not audio coming in.

Try and use without wsjt-x. See if you can hear the audio from a speaker.

Keep in mind that for wsjt-x to hear any audio from wfview, you will need a virtual audio cable. I did not see you mention any virtual audio cable so perhaps you need to revisit that.

Let me know,

Reply: Issue Resolved - Audio Transmission with USB Sound Card

Thank you for your reply!

After posting this, I was able to clear up my own thoughts. If we rule out hardware issues, the problem must be at the software level. I also realized that it’s likely not an issue with the settings in WSJT-X or WFVIEW, so I began investigating the audio input and output settings in Windows.

I went into the Windows Control Panel and found the Microphone settings. I selected the USB sound card’s settings and unchecked the Exclusive Mode option. I also ensured that the USB sound card microphone was not disabled. It seems that I may have accidentally altered these settings during some program installation or configuration changes, without realizing it.

After restarting the USB sound card settings for the microphone and ensuring that it wasn’t being exclusively accessed by any software, the audio transmission worked fine again. Both WSJT-X and WFVIEW can now transmit and receive audio correctly.

I hope my findings and solution can help others facing similar issues. Also, a reminder for Windows users: if you’re working with USB sound cards or need complete audio settings, make sure to access the settings through the Control Panel. The audio adjustment window from the taskbar (bottom right corner) is incomplete and may not show all options.
