IC-705 remote WSJT

I’m looking for some information or possibly a procedure to help me setup my IC-705 on my laptop to be accessed by another computer on or off my LAN to run WSJT remotely. I’m thinking I will use the USB connection on the laptop, but not sure how to setup the remote audio to be used by WSJT. Or should I just setup the remote 705 running WSJT local, and then access via teamviewer? Thanks for any info…

Hi Jeff,

You can just set up the wifi connection on the IC-705 per the owner’s manual, and then connect to the IP address of the IC-705 using wfview. This is the best way on the 705. You only need one computer – the one you’re sitting in front of.

Please see the User Manual of wfview for rig settings. We also have a section on audio routing, which you will need to set up to get audio from wfview into WSJT.

Let us know if it works out well,

Hi Jeff,
I am running the IC705 and WF View on various laptops which are independent of any WiFi network. WSJT-X works fine and is also easy to set up using a com port emulator such as com0com. I decided to persevere using this method as I was getting quite a bit of QRM from the USB connection when running WSJT-X. It does work and is well worth the trials and tribulations of sorting it all out. The only noticable difference with WSJT-X is that the time period is around 0.5 second delayed. Good luck. Hi James.

If you are using a fairly quick WiFi then you could try adjusting the latency setting in wfview. I have less than 100ms for TX/RX on my 9700, I haven’t tested the 705 latency but it feels around the same.

Latency does seem higher on MacOS I have found though as I suspect the QT audio drivers for Mac aren’t as stable?

Hi Phil,
I use the IC705 as a “direct access point” so no WiFi needed. I will try messing with the latency settings and see what happens.
Thanks for the suggestion and great support as always.
Cheers
James.

RX latency can be adjusted ‘on the fly’, when you start getting dropouts, it is too low

Got the 705 on the working on the LAN. I can tune to different freqs, etc. I then started up VAC. I tuned to a WX channel to get the RX working. I can see band activity on the local waterfall display, and on the VAC control panel. But when I select that in sound control panel I don’t hear any audio out of the laptop’s speaker. Any ideas?

73 Jeff kb2m

Hi Jeff,

Were you able to hear the audio before installing VAC?

No. The 705 is being accessed via wifi so there was no audio available without using the VAC…

73 Jeff kb2m

Hi Jeff.

If you are using the 705 connected to wfview over WLAN, you only need to use VAC to connect to software like WSJT-X, fldigi etc. If you just want to hear the radio audio then you don’t need any VAC software, just set the sound output in wfview to your preferred soundcard.

When using VAC drivers, you direct the output from wfview into the VAC and the VAC output into your other software so you won’t hear it (you can use the listen function available in the windows audio control though.

Eventually we will likely have an option to direct audio output to the default sound card in addition to any VAC sound card so you can easily listen to the audio when it is being routed elsewhere.

Hmmm. That’s what I thought should be happening. But in the system sound control panel I’m only seeing audio on the virtual audio inputs???

73 Jeff kb2m

Hi Jeff.

You need to select the audio output within wfview, by default it should choose the “default” input and output devices though. If it doesn’t work, take a look at the log file ( Log file | wfview )

Look for lines like this:

2021-05-14 20:03:09.323 DBG audio: Input setDevice() running : "Default Input Device"

This should tell you what audio device wfview is using.

something is wrong. in the windows sound control panel I’m seeing …,
side data in
705 rx
line 1
in the Wfview list I’m seeing…
705 rx
line 1
side data in
side data in
line 1
705 rx
Why is it listed twice in Wfview?

I just installed the 5/14 ver and all is now working so far. I now have audio as I expected regardless as to how the VAC is configured. Tomorrow I will proceed with getting a data mode working with the VAC output. What I really want to to is get it running with DXLab and WSJT. Thanks for all the good help and info…

73 Jeff kb2m

Got Wfview working with my 705, DXLab, and WSJT, on my Laptop via WIFI. I had to purchase a copy of VSPE as my other copy is registered on another computer. When I get to my summer home I plan on getting all working with the 7300 I leave up there for a remote system. The 705 was kinda a useless fun exercise as the 705 is more suited to portable station use due to the 10 watt output. But this makes me rethink that, as the 7300 doesn’t have WiFi or Ethernet, it might be easier to buy a 100 watt amp for the 705, rather then deal remotely with a Raspberry PI setup. The 10 watts just doesn’t get it with wire antennas. We shall see where this goes. Right now I’m using a PI running RemoteTX to access the 7300 there, a $70 a year service, a very stable system . At the very least I should be able to get a PI setup running with the 7300. Thanks for a great program…

Hi Jeff,

The latest version of wfview has a built-in server, which will put your IC-7300 on the network, both for control and audio. I am using one right now that way!

Here is some more info.

That’s great! I’ll be heading up there next week. I look forward to getting the 7300 setup. Thanks Elliott…
