Unable to connect to IC-7300 or IC-9700

Hi all,

I’ve read through a number of threads and tried all the suggestions, but I can’t get wfview to connect to either my IC-7300 or my IC-9700. Both are connected to my PC, running Windows 10, using USB cables.

I opened the wfview.log and it said this;
2022-01-06 18:39:16.092 INF system: “Starting wfview: build ea09647 on Jul 26 2021 at 11:23:33 by build@wfview.org

Then a long string of “device not open” lines.

the “COM1” thing confuses me as the ports that the IC-9700 and IC-7300 use are COM9, COM10 and COM11 respectively. I have tried specifying a COM port in the set up, but with no sucess.

I’ve closed all other programs that might use the COM ports, such as WSJT-X, and have rebooted the PC and unplugged and replugged the USB cables.

I have got CI-V Transceive set to “ON” for both radios, and I keep checking that it’s on. I’ve switched off the IC-9700 and tried connecting to the IC-7300, and vice versa.

Any ideas as to what I’m doing wrong please?

Thanks - Dave (G0DJA)

Hi David,

I assume that you are using the USB connection to your radios? Auto detection of the serial port doesn’t work on Windows so you must manually select the port, save settings and restart wfview.

Incidentally, connecting via ethernet to the IC9700 provides a much better experience (smoother waterfall)

Thanks Phil,

I’ve got the IC-7300 to work by doing as you suggested and selecting COM11 (the one for the IC-7300 on my PC) in setup and saving then restarting the program.

Thanks for that. I’ll try to set up the IC-9700 later.

OK, now got both the IC-7300 and IC-9700 to connect via their respective COM ports.

Now the reply “Incidentally, connecting via ethernet to the IC9700 provides a much better experience (smoother waterfall)” is becoming more interesting as smoother waterfall would be good. I’ve tried to connect using the IP address in Network but I’ve not yet been able to connect using the local PC. Do I have to use another PC/laptop on the network? If so, I think I may need to get into the router and look at the available ports and firewall settings. I’ve done it before, but it was a bit of a pain…

Hi Dave,

You just need your computer to be on the same network as the IC-9700. The IC-9700 needs to be plugged into ethernet and the network needs to work on the radio. Most likely you would enable DHCP config on the IC-9700, enable Network Control, add a User and Password, and then restart the IC-9700. Then enter the network setup again and see if there is an ip address assigned. If so, try to connect to that ip from wfview.

Thanks for the reply. I’ll see if I can find an ethernet cable. I’ll need to check how that will connect to the 9700. I’m not at home, so I’ll open the manual and check what connectors are on the back panel. Obviously there’s the ‘D’ connector for USB but I will see whether that’s the one for ethernet as well.

Just brought up details of the back panel and I see where the ethernet cable connects now. I’ll grab a lead tomorrow and have a go at connecting via that connector.
