So there are a number of posts on this topic, but none of the answers are very satisfying.
It appears that by design, there is no way to assign a random key on the keyboard to be a “hold and release” PTT function (or even a push-on, push-off for that matter…). The space bar is the obvious choice for both.
Note: In another post, someone suggested leaving the mouse pointer on the transmit button and then the space bar will work. But this is NOT the case, at least in Version 1.64, the space bar just brings up The “About” screen.
If I were to guess, the likely reason is that when you hold down a key on the keyboard, Widows goes into auto-repeat mode and unless the software can rapidly consume the buffer, or read the key status directly, then it will be difficult to implement a “hold-on / Release off” PTT function. But this does not explain why the author chose not to allow any key on the keyboard to act like a “click-on” / “click-off” transmit button.
Can someone verify if this is true?
I find using the transmit button to be cumbersome, primarily because it requires using the mouse.
And using Control-T/Control-R is also awkward. Why can’t I assign the keys I want or use the same key for both ON and OFF?
Overall, it’s just frustrating that the only option for PTT is to either ON, or OFF… and that’s it.
Makes no sense to me…
